Dinosaurs, with their awe-inspiring size, mysterious extinction, and fascinating features, have a natural appeal to learners of all ages. Harnessing this fascination, we can create immersive nonfiction units that dig deep into the world of these prehistoric creatures while also covering essential standards.

Planning a Nonfiction Dinosaur Unit Study

1. Select a Variety of Resources for Students to Explore

Begin by building a collection of high-quality nonfiction texts about dinosaurs. Look for books, articles, and online resources that offer accurate information presented in an engaging manner. Make sure to incorporate a mix of reading levels to accommodate diverse learners in your classroom. In my case, I decided to write my own nonfiction passages on eight different dinosaurs.

2. Find Interactive Learning Activities

Complement reading materials with hands-on activities that reinforce key concepts. For instance, students can label diagrams of dinosaur anatomy, construct fossil replicas, or engage in role-playing scenarios to understand dinosaur behavior. These activities not only enhance comprehension but also cater to different learning styles.

In my nonfiction dinosaur unit, I have tried to incorporate all of these features. Though I haven’t included reader’s theater I did have a read-to-me book center and I had books on CDs kids could listen to. I had so many teachers surprised that I still had a listening center in 2nd grade, but my students loved it and it brought literature to students who otherwise may not be able to access the reading.

Here are links to some of the items I used to put together my listening center:

  • Nat Geo Dinosaur Nonfiction Reader with CD
  • How Do Dinosaurs? Book & CD – Set of 3
  • CD Player with Bluetooth
  • We Both Read: About Dinosaurs

3. Explore Cross-Curricular Connections

Dinosaurs provide a rich opportunity to integrate various subjects beyond science. For instance, in language arts, students can write imaginative stories featuring dinosaurs. One fun writing prompt is to have students invent a dinosaur based on what they have learned and then write a mini report about it. In math, they can analyze data related to dinosaur sizes and habitats. By making interdisciplinary connections, we deepen students’ understanding and foster critical thinking skills.

Another cross-curricular connection I would aim for was to coordinate the timing of teaching my Fiction Dinosaur Unit with my Nonfiction Unit which lends to great compare and contrast opportunities. My fiction unit includes 5 different dinosaur books and focuses on identifying the main idea and supporting details of each text. Each unit also includes fun crafts, writing prompts, discussion questions, and lots of comprehension activities.

4. Utilize Technology

Leverage digital resources such as interactive websites, virtual reality experiences, or multimedia presentations to enhance learning. Virtual dinosaur tours such as the one found at the Natural History Museum of LA also has many different online activities, printable lesson plans, and educational videos. Technology offers dynamic ways to supplement traditional instruction and cater to digital-native students. I also offer my dinosaur unit study in digital format to help support digital learners and offer a flexible way of reaching students.

5. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Emphasize the importance of perseverance and resilience in scientific inquiry. Studying dinosaurs and paleontology provides the perfect opportunity to discuss growth mindset and I am always looking for an in for that! Discuss how paleontologists overcome challenges in uncovering and interpreting fossil information. Encourage students to embrace mistakes as opportunities for learning and discovery, fostering a growth mindset in both academic and personal adventures.

By incorporating dinosaurs into our nonfiction curriculum, we transform learning into an adventure that sparks curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and builds a lifelong love of exploration. Let’s embark on this prehistoric journey together and unearth the wonders of nonfiction education in our classrooms.
